The medical device product cycle from concept to a commercially viable product is not only a long one but also a stage gated process. Coupled with the complexity of today’s medical devices and intense quality and regulatory scrutiny, there exists need for new processes, scale up strategies and technologies for device manufacturing. From quick prototyping to fast scale up, the demands on manufacturing are endless. Innovation in materials, convergence of technologies and global supply chain are also the key drivers to the changing face of manufacturing. The solution is to incorporate good manufacturing and assembly practices early on in the concept phase and avoid the expensive and time-sensitive gap between design and manufacturing. As an answer to these challenges, the manufacturing technology of today also needs to be as innovative as the device itself. This session reviews the transition of current manufacturing practices to the new platforms that make up today’s and future manufacturing technologies, the challenges ahead and the solutions for medical device manufacturing.
