Although there is no definitive protocol or standard for the Internet of Things (IoT), most agree that the integration of the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is necessary in order to provide the addressing and routing capabilities needed for the billions of devices that are predicted to inhabit the IoT. Most engineers are familiar with the structure and capabilities of IPv4, which is still the prevalent standard in today's Internet. However, IPv6 is very different and is not backward-compatible with IPv4. In this class, we will cover the structure of IPv6 and its differences with IPv4 and present the various ways that IPv6 is used in the IoT. The class will feature demonstrations of some boards demonstrating some IPv6 functions and programming. We will also demonstrate some of the test and troubleshooting methods using Wireshark. There will be a hands-on element to the class for those who bring a laptop with wi-fi capabilities - we recommend that you pre-install the latest version of Wireshark right before class.
