The connectivity of the IoT can be implemented as either a cloud model or a fog model. The fog model has many advantages from a security perspective due to the fact that the sensor devices are not exposed to the Internet but rather communicate via a border gateway. In this session, we will present the characteristics of an IEEE 802.15.4 mesh network and the transparent Internet routing using the 6LoWPAN version of IPv6 as found in Thread and ZigBee IP. We will then show how to create a low-cost border gateway that can span from the internal IEEE 802.15.4 network to the Internet for access to the cloud and back.
