Medical devices, especially Class 3, have a long life cycle due to regulatory and replacement costs. Often, these systems utilize technology that is a decade old. Customers, however, want the latest features and capabilities. Manufactures make significant investments (e.g., time, capital) to get devices approved by regulatory bodies. Systems cannot be redesigned and certified at the same pace as consumer electronics. Manufactures, therefore, must find innovative ways of incorporating new technology into legacy systems. In this session, we will discuss the specifics of a system at Abiomed that was designed and released more than 10 years ago. The engineering team was able to take a closed proprietary system and add networking, cloud connectivity, IoT, and new algorithms without changing the existing base hardware, and without requiring a major regulatory certification.

Innovative techniques to update legacy medical embedded systems with modern technology to meet today's market demands.
