    Remotely updating firmware is a critical for any embedded system and even more so for an IoT device. Bootloaders are often added along side application code to facilitate firmware updates but very few developers truly understand how to build one robustly. This session will examine the fundamental challenges facing software engineers in performing updates in a secure and safe manner. Attendees will walk through the entire bootloader development process. Topics that will be covered include requirements definition, bootloader model selection and architecture development, bootloader challenges, hardware abstraction layer design, communication protocols, developing memory maps, system recovery, security considerations and more. Examples from real world bootloaders will be used to supply attendees with ideas, code snippets and solutions that can be used in their own development efforts.
